According to a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll, a majority (61%) of Americans believe that artificial intelligence (AI) poses a threat to humanity and could jeopardise our civilization. The swift growth of AI technology has propelled it to the spotlight, raising concerns about its potential impact on our future.
As AI becomes increasingly integrated into everyday life, questions about its regulation, misuse, and overall impact on society are being actively debated by lawmakers, industry leaders, and the public at large. In this article, we will explore the survey respondents’ concerns about AI, the ongoing AI arms race, the need for regulation, and the importance of balancing the perception of AI’s risks with its potential benefits.
Public Concerns and Perceptions
The survey suggests that more than two-thirds of Americans are worried about the negative effects of AI, with a staggering 61% expressing concerns about its potential to jeopardise humanity. The data indicates a threefold increase in the number of people who foresee adverse outcomes from AI compared to those who do not.
Interestingly, the survey found variations in perceptions based on political and religious affiliations. Among those who voted for Donald Trump in the 2020 election, 70% expressed higher levels of concern about the threats posed by AI. Comparatively, 60% of Joe Biden voters shared similar worries.
Evangelical Christians were also more likely to “strongly agree” that AI presents risks to humanity, with 32% expressing this sentiment compared to 24% of non-Evangelical Christians.
The Impact of ChatGPT and the AI Arms Race
The rise of AI chatbots, particularly OpenAI’s ChatGPT, has accelerated the integration of AI into daily life. ChatGPT’s unprecedented growth has initiated an AI arms race, with industry giants like Microsoft and Google competing to achieve greater AI milestones. The influence of AI technology has become a central topic in public discourse, raising concerns among lawmakers and AI companies alike.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently testified before the U.S. Congress, expressing his concerns about potential misuse of AI and advocating for regulation. U.S. Senator Cory Booker echoed these concerns during a Senate panel, acknowledging the global explosion of AI and explaining the need to address its regulation.
The Need for Regulation and Public Perception
The survey results indicate a pressing need for regulation and governance of AI technology. As Senator Booker noted, containing the impact of AI is a challenging task due to its rapid proliferation worldwide. The concerns voiced by Americans mirror those expressed during the early stages of the nuclear era, highlighting the urgent necessity for action.
Landon Klein, the director of U.S. policy at the Future of Life Institute, drew parallels between the current state of AI and the beginnings of the nuclear era. Klein said that the broad range of Americans who worry about the negative effects of AI and stressed the importance of taking proactive measures.
Benefits of AI
While the poll underscores the prevailing concerns about AI’s potential threats, this does not take away from what AI offers people in all industries. Experts argue that public understanding of AI’s potential benefits is limited, with a disproportionate focus on high-profile applications like ChatGPT.
Sebastian Thrun, a computer science professor at Stanford and founder of Google X, highlighted the need to consider the underlying purpose behind AI development. Thrun states that AI has the potential to enhance people’s quality of life, increase competence and improve efficiency and save money running businesses in various fields.
Ion Stoica, a professor at UC Berkeley and co-founder of AI company Anyscale, pointed out that many Americans may not realise the pervasive presence of AI in their daily lives. From home automation systems to workplace productivity tools, AI has already made substantial inroads, revolutionising various industries and sectors.
Priorities and Public Perception
Although concerns about AI’s impact are widespread, the poll reveals that other pressing issues take precedence in the public’s consciousness. Crime and the economy rank higher on the list of kitchen table issues, with 77% of respondents supporting increased police funding to combat crime and 82% expressing worries about the risk of a recession.
This disparity highlights the need for a balanced understanding of AI’s benefits and risks, ensuring that public perception aligns with the broader implications of AI technology.
