Want to Collect Professional Grade GIS Data without Complicated Mapping Software? Well if so, Juniper Systems answered that question recently via a live webcast. The Topic, Juniper Aspect
It was back in October (2012) when Juniper Systems officially released their Juniper Aspect field mapping solution – Formerly known as IntuiTrace, Juniper Aspect now offers enhanced imagery options, increased database functionality, and compatibility with Bing® Maps, Google® Earth, Esri® ArcGIS Online, and existing customer GIS.
Ideally suited for non-GIS professionals, the intuitive user interface of Juniper Aspect is tailored to field crews and maintenance technicians enabling other professionals, and natural resource managers/analysts to quickly and easily capture and manage data in the field. Data capture is possible via the Juniper Mesa and Archer handhelds, while additional data management is then supported by Aspect in the desktop environment.
This morning (Dec 18, 2012), Via live webinar, Trevor Brown and Scott Hunter of Juniper Systems walked us though a live show and tell and demonstration in order to see the full capabilities of Aspect. Brown commented how the solution is ideally suitable for the non-GIS Pro and the app draws on the experience of Juniper who many know as the developer of the popular Archer and Mesa rugged devices for field data capture. Note, Juniper takes much pride in delivering high quality solutions and boasts a very low return/failure rate on their devices, much lower than the industry standard! The company churns out roughly 10,000 devices per year, tailored to those requiring data collection in harsh environments. Testing of devices is very important to the company and they are small enough in size that they proudly offer live technical support to their customers.
Juniper Aspect is compatible to run on the Juniper Systems Mesa® Rugged Notepad and Archer Field PC® and is the ideal solution for:
- As-Built Documentation
- Tree Inventories
- New Customer Assessments
- Water Efficiency Audits
- Certified Meter Reading
- Field Asset Documentation
- Field Asset Inspection
- Field Repair Assessments
- Tree and Vegetation Maintenance

In the demo, Brown ran through several scenarios (for example an urban tree inventory project) and demonstrated the functionality available to users of the desktop and mobile solutions. Project management is enabled in both environments where the users have a variety of import/export capabilities available, data capture tools, layer and data management, and the ability to connect to a WMS for additional data resources. Overall, the big plus for Aspect is the short learning curve that users can expect. Some of the benefits that users can expect include:
- Increased profits from new revenue opportunities
- Time saved with accurate as-built maps and asset documentation
- Improved communication with field personnel and customers
- Faster repairs with GPS guidance to hard-to-find components
- Cleaner maintenance, repair, and upgrade documentation
- Water conservation records for painless auditing
- GPS verifiable documentation for accurate billing
- Get an edge on the competition using GPS/GIS technology
Note: desktop and Pro versions of the software are available
